Changing jobs is always a big choice that shouldn't be made on the fly. Not everything on TV about a real estate career is true. Make sure you want this career before you spend time and money on the next step. Do your due diligence. Talk to your friends and family and learn more about the job before you decide. Being a full-time real estate agent is not a job; it's a business, and you own it. Here are some tips that will help:

  • ·         Fill out the Personal Orientation Profile
  • ·         Talk to friends and family
  • ·         Call your local Royal LePage office to take a tour, meet their agents and speak with a broker

Step 2: Sign up for the Real Estate Licensing Program

As of January 2, 2014, if you want to become a Real Estate Agent, you have to take a series of four modules called Salesperson Licensing Courses. You become a fully licenced Real Estate Agent if you pass the course. The first three modules are done at home with the help of a text book and a workbook. The fourth module is taught in class for 1.5 days. There is also a way to take them online

Course registration is held at the Manitoba Real Estate Association at:

1873 Inkster Boulevard
Winnipeg, Manitoba
R2R 2A6
Phone: 204.772.0405

Step 3: Choose an agent to work with.

There are a lot of brokerages in Winnipeg, and each one has its own fees, culture, training, and growth. Some agents in the classes start interviewing with brokerages while they are still in the classes. It is best to do interviews during Phase 3 so that you are ready to go as soon as you finish your licencing requirements. Learn what RLP can do for you.

Step 4: Ask for your licence from the Manitoba Securities Commission.

The Manitoba Securities Commission has a fee of $125 for a licence and will do a check of your criminal record (approx 24-48 hours).

Step 5: Get registered with the local real estate boards.

If you work for a broker who is a member of a real estate board or association, you have to pay extra fees. These include board or association dues, a one-time initiation fee for the MREA REALTOR® Security Program, and levies for the MREA Reimbursement Fund and the REIAOC Errors and Omissions Insurance Program, which range from $1600 to $2600.

Step 6: You're ready to go!

After completing Steps 1–4, you are a fully licenced and registered REALTOR®. Now, you'll really start to train. Find out what Royal LePage can do to help you do well in your new job.
